Dr Shirley Cox BDS(Hons) FDSRCS(Eng) MSc
MOrthRCS(Eng) FDSOrthRCS(Eng)
Shirley is a Consultant Orthodontist at The Royal London Hospital and Ipswich NHS Trust. At Hospital Lane Dental Clinic, she offers specialist orthodontic treatment as part of our multi-disciplined approach to dentistry. Shirley has a particular interest in hypodontia (missing teeth).
Shirley welcomes new child and adult patients, on a private basis.
The number of adults choosing to have orthodontic treatment is growing. Many people are now seeking to improve their smiles, using the latest less-visible cosmetic braces. They are no longer concerned about being too old to change their smile and a number of high-profile celebrity patients, such as Tom Cruise, have helped encourage people to make that change. At Hospital Lane Dental Clinic, we offer a number of orthodontic systems. These include both fixed appliances and removable near-invisible methods, such as Clearstep©, Invisalign© and lingual orthodontics, Incognito©.
Orthodontic treatment by Dr Cox provides many benefits to patients:
- Personal service by a Consultant Orthodontist
- Convenient after-hours appointments
- Cosmetic braces
- Choice of treatment options
- Non-extraction treatment when possible
- Treatment for a wide variety of orthodontic problems
- Monthly payment plan
- Provision of retainers
- No waiting lists
Your first visit – What to expect
Your first visit is your opportunity to discuss with Dr Cox exactly what you would like to be changed about your teeth. Together you can discuss the options available to you. It is important that you are given as much information as possible, both verbally and visually. Diagnostic radiographs will be taken at this appointment and a treatment plan and an estimate will consequently be forwarded to you.
Types of Orthodontic Appliances
Damon© Self ligating appliance
The Damon© system is a new and different way of fixed orthodontic appliances. It is based upon a combination of three component factors:
- Damon passive self-ligating braces, which eliminate the need for elastic or metal ties.
- Light high-technology shape-memory wires, which move teeth faster and require fewer adjustments.
- A new clinically-proven treatment approach, which aligns your teeth and enhances your facial aesthetics – usually without extractions or rapid palatal expanders.

Clarity™ceramic brackets
Ceramic brackets are far less visible than the traditional metal brackets. They are translucent and blend with the colour of the teeth for a more natural appearance.
The picture to the right shows the difference between Clarity™ ceramic brackets and metal brackets.

Lingual
The lingual brace works in the same way as a conventional brace. A small metal bracket is bonded to each tooth which is connected by a wire that slowly pulls the teeth into the correct alignment.
It benefits the many people who will not consider orthodontics unless the appliances are totally hidden from view.
Shown in the pictures to the right - the second picture illustrates that you wouldn’t even know she was wearing one!

ClearStep™
ClearStep™ is a method of orthodontics that involves wearing a series of removable clear positioning trays. These gently guide your teeth into their desired position. It is a simple and popular choice with patients and can be a welcome alternative to wearing a fixed orthodontic appliance.
A variety of orthodontic situations, such as rotated teeth, gaps and prominent teeth, can be successfully treated using ClearStep™ clear positioners.
This method is invisible, so no-one can tell you are straightening your teeth.

Invisalign©
Invisalign© is a similar system to Clearstep™, using a series of clear removable trays. It is an American innovation and all laboratory work has to be sent to the USA. Invisalign was started in 1997 and has successfully treated thousands of patients.
