Sedation Treatments
Intra-venous sedation can be used to make the experience easier for some
patients. This involves an injection into an arm or the back of a hand of a
powerful sedative to calm a nervous patient.
The drug has three main effects; to promote a feeling of calm within the patient; to reduce patient awareness of treatment; to provide a powerful amnesia so that the patient remembers very little of the procedure. Most importantly, you will not lose consciousness or be ‘sent to sleep’. Whilst the effects are variable, most people enter a state that allows treatment to be performed without undue patient anxiety.
A thorough medical history is taken before the procedure.
The drug used is Midazolam, usually 10mg, and is very safe. We monitor the pulse and oxygen saturation throughout the procedure and a reversal agent is available. During the procedure, the dentist will always be accompanied by a qualified and suitably trained dental assistant.
